By Abby Tolbert /

The end of summer is always a bummer, even if you’re excited about upcoming pumpkin patch outings and sweater weather. For kids, Autumn means that a new school year is on the horizon, which brings about feelings of excitement, anticipation, and nervousness. To make the transition easier, here are some fun lunch box ideas for the new school year.

Hawaiian Tortilla Roll-Ups

If your kids love Hawaiian pizza, they’ll go crazy for this sweet and salty main entree. These roll-ups are made with ham, pineapple, and a whole wheat tortilla for added nutrition. Pair it with grapes, sweet potato chips, and cherry tomatoes and you’ll have a fun and filling meal to make over and over again.

Pesto Chicken and Veggie Meatballs

These bite-size meatballs are perfect for finicky eaters, because, as we all know, kids are 90% more likely to eat tiny foods. Serve with toothpicks and a side of pizza sauce, or pair with pasta or zucchini noodles and your choice of marinara or alfredo sauce for simple lunch fare.

DIY Pizza Lunchables

Ahhh, lunchables. If you didn’t eat them as a kid, you were definitely green with envy when one of your friends whipped one out of their lunchbox. This pizza lunchable DIY packs on more nutrition than the frozen option and is made with whole wheat pita, pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperoni. Add in veggies for extra healthy goodness.

Mexican Food

Bring on the cheesy goodness! For an atypical lunch option, serve your little one a mini quesadilla with cheese, veggies, and protein. On the side, add grapes, apple wedges, and corn puffs to marry sweet and savory

Breakfast for Lunch

Breakfast for dinner has always been a stalwart staple for busy families. This yummy “breakfast for lunch” option consists of mini pancakes, sausage links, yogurt, cucumbers, a hard-boiled egg, and blueberries.
