February 14th always seems like a bright spot in the middle of the longest part of winter. Granted, chocolate, flowers, and handmade cards usually take center stage on Valentine’s Day (all things I also appreciate), but it’s nice to reach for a stack of love-centered books leading up to the middle of the shortest month.
Do you ever look at your kid and think, why are you so obsessed with me? Our little ones love to copy all that we do, especially when it comes to our… unbecoming habits. *sigh* If only we could get them to model our love of broccoli like they do our (accidental) use of colorful language.
Kids have rich imaginations and boundless curiosity, which allow them to see life and everything around them in kaleidoscope colors. Everything seems brighter, more colorful, and more interesting in their eyes.
Nowadays, what isn’t there to get your children? From little plastic figurines in hatchable shells (I’m lookin’ at you Hatchimals) to interactive apps with endless in-game purchases, there seems to be something for everything. And while there are plenty of fun and enjoyable toys out there, within a few months they seem to become old news to your ever-growing kids.
When our firstborn turned two, rather than accumulate more stuff, we asked guests to bring a book in lieu of gifts. We collected a handful of new and used titles that we then donated to the Ready Readers program in our community. This book-giving birthday tradition has continued and it doesn’t diminish how special birthdays feel; in fact, I’d say it enhances the experience for all involved. Here’s why: books keep giving.
Isn’t it strange how you don’t really feel the passing of time until you have kids? My husband and I have been together for about 12 years and yet, it felt as if time was standing still until we had our minis. Suddenly, each small marker of passing time grew more significant. She’s xx weeks old! Then it’s months and before you know it, you’re waking up on the morning of another birthday asking yourself, where did the time go?
We’ve got a fun treat for October and it isn’t Halloween! We partnered with Build-A-Bear Workshop to offer a fun, FREE birthday surprise during the entire month of October!
Ah, another summer over and the air hums with the excited trepidation of starting a new school year. It’s a feeling that’s hard to shake, even as an adult. And whether you’ve finished or haven’t given a second thought to back-to-school shopping, it’s helpful to have a few books in your back pocket to gently address the recurring worries most children face when starting a new school year.
Going to Disney World can either be a very stressful, overwhelming, exhausting process or a fun and magical vacation… it’s up to you! On June 30th, I took over Pinhole Press’s Instagram. I was there with my husband and almost two-year-old, 6 months pregnant, it was in the 90s, pretty crowded, thunderstorms rolling in early afternoon… and we had an amazing day!!
